GOP drops challenge in East Rutherford

First Democratic mayor since 1970

By David Wildstein, January 07 2020 12:44 pm

The race for mayor in East Rutherford is over, giving Democrats control of the mayoralty for the first time since 1970.

Republican Sergio Segalini is dropping his challenge of the 2019 general election, which he lost to Democrat Jeffrey Lahullier by just five votes.

The GOP was only able to prove four votes were invalid for miscounted, the New Jersey Globe has learned.

In a response filed Lahullier’s attorneys, Democrats had challenged the eligibility of three voter and had claimed the Republicans were seeking to disenfranchise certain voters.

The East Rutherford challenge was set to be heard in court next week.

Lahullier took office last week.
