Former Pennsylvania Governor and Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell on Thursday endorsed Jim McGreevey for the mayorship of Jersey City, according to a release.

Rendell’s tenure as governor overlapped with McGreevey’s stint as New Jersey’s governor for nearly two years.

“Jim McGreevey understands what it takes to govern a great American city,” Rendell said in the release. “Like me, Jim has managed budgets in tough times, tackled affordability head-on, and worked to ensure every child has access to a quality education. He knows that a mayor’s job is about more than speeches. It’s about getting results.”

The endorsement is expected to help McGreevey’s fundraising efforts.

McGreevey thanked Rendell for the endorsement.

“To have his support is both humbling and energizing,” McGreevey said in the release. “He led Philadelphia with heart and courage, and he has never stopped fighting for equity and good governance. His endorsement means a great deal, as Governor Rendell politically, but personally.”

McGreevey, who resigned from the governorship amid scandal in 2004, is one of several candidates looking to succeed Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop in November’s nonpartisan mayoral election.
