The local firefighters union in Edison has endorsed Democrat Sam Joshi for mayor.
“Sam Joshi is the clear-cut person to be the next Mayor of Edison. Sam is a hardworking, dedicated individual with proven leadership skills and excellent community ties to get the job done.,” said Robert Yackel, President of Edison Firefighters IAFF Local 1197. “Sam has a vision for our town that will lead to a bright future for all.”
Edison, the state’s sixth-largest municipality, has 134 career firefighters. It’s one of just a few towns in the state that uses both paid and volunteer firefighters.
“I am honored and grateful to receive this major endorsement from the firefighter’s union whose members put their lives at risk on a daily basis to save lives and serve the community,” said Joshi. “These heroic individuals are an invaluable part of the fabric of our community, and I thank them for their support.”
The Republican nominee, Keith Hahn, slammed Yackel for backing Joshi and alleged that the union leader had told him he was not going to endorse the Democratic councilman.
“When our elected officials do not have the independence to make decisions based on what is good for the people of Edison, but rather what satisfies the political bosses and special interests they are beholden to, the residents pay the price,” Hahn said in a Facebook pos. “I thank the many firefighters who live and vote in town for your phone calls and continued support and will work even harder to stop the dirty politics and infighting that has plagued us for years.”
Hahn, a retired police officer, had been the Edison Democratic Municipal Chairman before switching parties to run for mayor four years ago.
