Former Assemblyman Reginald Atkins (D-Roselle) was arrested early this morning on assault and harassment charges for an incident that occurred on Sunday.

Atkins was charged with simple assault, assault with the threat of serious bodily injury, and harassment, including threats to offensively strike or touch, records show.  Local police arrested him in Roselle, where he served as mayor and councilman.

He is currently being held at the Essex County Jail in Newark.  New Jersey Courts are closed today, and it’s unclear whether Atkins will need to remain there overnight or appear for a first appearance this afternoon.

He served as a Union County assemblyman, was elected to the State Assembly in 2021, and served two terms before stepping down in January of this year.  Atkins is the senior pastor and founder of Zion Family Worship Center Church.

In the legislature, he chaired the Assembly Oversight, Reform and Federal Relations Committee.
