Assemblyman Arthur Barclay (D-Camden) has submitted his letter of resignation from the State Assembly.
He was arrested on domestic violence charges on June 7. Party leaders told him to resign on Monday, following a New Jersey Globe report of his arrest. Barclay’s resignation as delayed after it took officials two days to get him to sign and submit a former letter.
Democratic county committee members from the 5th legislative district in Camden and Gloucester counties must now hold a special election convention to fill his seat.
Since the resignation letter was dated June 18 but not submitted until today, it is unclear when the clock starts — either June 24 or June 26. That is only important if Assembly Democrats need that vote to pass a state budget — or override a gubernatorial veto.
