Essex progressives praise freeholders’ Medicare for All resolution

Symbolic measure urges Congress to pass Medicare for All

Two months after their attempt to topple incumbent Essex County Freeholders ended in crushing defeat, Our Revolution Essex County is applauding their former opponents for passing a resolution in support of Medicare for All.

“Not only will Medicare for all at a federal level cover all people with expanded and improved healthcare, it will have profound fiscal savings as well,” Our Revolution Essex County Chairman Justin Goldsman said. “We applaud the commissioners for leading the way in encouraging our federal delegation to support HR1384, the improved Medicare for All act of 2019.”

Gov. Phil Murphy has signed a bill that will see freeholders renamed as county commissioners on Jan. 1.

The resolution is a purely symbolic move, and Medicare for All would face difficulties passing even if Democrats held both chambers of Congress and the presidency, but the move appears to represent an armistice between the county’s establishment Democrats and the progressives.

“We thank our progressive allies for fighting for this issue, and we look forward to helping our communities gain access to the services they need during these times,” Essex Freeholder President Brendan Gill said.
