The Essex County Board of Freeholders voted on Wednesday to extend the insurance brokerage contract of a firm run by Democratic powerhouse George Norcross through the end of 2020, instead of approving a new three-year contract.

The freeholder agenda had initially included a resolution that approved a new contract for Connor Strong & Buckalew , but instead decided to enter into a new procurement process.

The administration of Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo had recommended a new contract for the firm after a procurement process.

The move passed 8-1, with only Freeholder President Brendan Gill opposing the extension of Norcross’ insurance contact.

The freeholders then voted unanimously against a resolution that would have approved a new three-year for Connor Strong.

“This presents an opportunity for the county to diversify and enhance who it’s doing business with,” said Gill. “We want to be as engaged as legally possible during that process.”
