Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz has won endorsements from eight other New Jersey mayors in her bid for re-election to a fourth term.
Mayors Christian Bollwage (Elizabeth), Frank Moran (Camden), Janice Kovach (Clinton), Dahlia Vertreese (Hillside), Tony Vauss (Irvington), Dwayne Warren (Orange), Adrian Mapp (Plainfield) Donald Shaw (Roselle) and Michael Melham (Belleville) are backing Diaz in a December 15 runoff election against Helmin Caba, a city councilman and the Perth Amboy Democratic Municipal Chairman.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka endorsed Diaz on Wednesday.
“Mayor Wilda Diaz has been the experienced, proven leader that Perth Amboy needs. She is hyper-focused on serving each and every neighborhood, always seeking opportunities to improve the local quality of life,” said Melham “Mayor Diaz continues to break the glass ceiling, so to speak, serving as the first female mayor in one of the oldest cities in the United States, while also known statewide as a leading Latina woman. It is my strong hope that she can continue the progress in Perth Amboy, where her leadership has led to drastic improvement and investment throughout the entire city. That is why she has my strong endorsement.”
Diaz said he was “humbled by the overwhelming show of support by my colleagues across the state.”
“As mayors, they share a deep understanding of the commitment and skills needed to serve in this role. I have deep respect for the work they are doing in their respective communities and am honored that I have earned theirs as well,” Diaz said. “It brings me an immeasurable sense of pride that I get to share my experience of leading the city that I love with these thoughtful and formidable leaders throughout the state.”
