Democrat Angie Devanney, a well-known Democratic operative who was political director of Jim McGreevey’s 1997 gubernatorial campaign, was elected mayor of Berkeley Heights on Tuesday.

Devanney defeated Republican mayor Robert Woodruff by 203 votes, 2,806 to 2,603.

Two Republican incumbents, Michael D’Aquila and Michelle Greco, lost re-election to the borough council.  They were beaten by Democrats Stephen Yellin and Alvaro Medeiros.

In 2017, Medeiros lost his bid for a council seat by just eight votes.

Republicans had a 5-1 majority on the council.  The sweep of the mayoral race and both council seats gives Democrats control of the town.

Devanney is the former borough administrator.
