Deborah Smith is slated to become the director of the Morris County Board of Freeholders next month when the board reorganizes.
She will succeed Douglas Cabana, who has been on the freeholder board for 25 years and has spent five years as freeholder director.
Smith served 20 years as a councilwoman in Denville before winning a freeholder seat in 2015. She was re-elected in 2018.
The new deputy director will be Stephen Shaw, a first-term freeholder and former Mountain Lakes mayor.
The current deputy director, Heather Darling, is resigning from the freeholder board in a couple of weeks to become the new Morris County Surrogate.
