The Communication Workers of America (CWA) New Jersey, one of the state’s largest and most politically progressive unions, today announced its endorsement of Paterson Mayor André Sayegh for a second term.
“When we first endorsed Mayor Sayegh in 2018, it was because we believed Andre fit the mold of a progressive leader who will always put Paterson’s working families first,” CWA NJ state director Fran Ehret said in a statement. “Over the last four years, Mayor Sayegh has wholeheartedly lived up to both his promise as mayor and his promises to working people.”
This isn’t CWA NJ’s first endorsement of Sayegh. Four years ago today, the union backed the then-councilman in his second bid for the mayoralty amid a chaotic open-seat race.
This year, Sayegh is considered at least a mild favorite for re-election, but he does face a strong challenge from Councilman Alex Mendez, who was the runner-up in the 2018 contest. Also running are Councilman Michael Jackson, Councilman Luis Velez, and former Councilman Aslan Goow.
