The Bridgewater PBA Local 174 is taking sides in the Republican mayoral primary, endorsing Councilman Matthew Moench against incumbent Dan Hayes.

The police union said in a statement that their endorsement follows “relentless political advertisements used by Mayor Hayes that show him as a top supporter of public safety and law enforcement.”

“Under Mayor Hayes and his administration, the Bridgewater PBA is once again working without a contract,” the union said.  “We don not publicize this through lawn signs or public statements because we understand that this is the reality of collective bargaining.:

The PBA said that Moench has enjoyed an open dialogue with the PBA.

“Although at times we may not agree, both sides are always amicable about our disagreements and work together to find solutions that are best for Bridgewater Township,” the union said.  “Matthew Moench has had an open dialogue with the PBA for several years.”

Moench said that the safety of local residents is his top priority.

“There is no greater function that government does daily than this,” Moench said.  “I am proud of Bridgewater’s police department.
