Bergen GOP sets February 1 filing deadline

Bergen County Republicans have set a February 1 filing deadline for candidates to seek their organization line in the June primary election.

The convention date has not been set.  That vote will be preceded by a recommendation from the Bergen GOP policy committee.

In addition the race for governor, Republicans will award organization support for candidates for State Senate and Assembly in districts 35, 36, 37, 38, 39 and 40, for County Clerk and Sheriff, and for two County Commissioner seats.

Bergen is the third county to announce a deadline to file letters of intent compete in a convention with a competitive fight for the GOP gubernatorial nomination.

Ocean County has set a January 16 filing deadline, followed by Hunterdon on January 29.

Former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli (R-Hillsborough) announced 25 endorsements from Bergen County on Friday, including three district GOP chairs and 24 municipal chairs.

Former Republican State Chairman Doug Steinhardt has not yet released names of supporters from Bergen’s 70 municipalities.

Four years ago, the organization line in Bergen went to Kim Guadagno.  She carried Bergen by 6,222 votes, 57%-28%, against Ciattarelli in a five-way race.

Bergen County has 146,444 registered Republicans, more than any county but Ocean.

In 2020, Bergen Republicans cancelled their convention due to the coronavirus pandemic and awarded their line based on the policy committee selections.
