Bayonne mayor’s ex-chief of staff, who is also his nephew, will run campaign to unseat him

Former Chiaravalloti chief of staff will co-manage race to oust Jimmy Davis

Two Democrats with close ties to Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis will run the campaign to unseat him, the latest in a series of close political advisors that are opposing his bid for a third term.

Andrew Casais, Davis’ nephew and his former chief of staff, will manage the campaign of City Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski, along with Raine Cuseglio, who was chief of staff to former Assembly Majority Whip Nicholas Chiaravalloti (D-Bayonne).

Over the past two years I’ve grown increasingly concerned about the tone of the Davis administration,” Casais said.  “During my time in City Hall I remember it being a place of open minds, open doors, and open communication – but now it seems to be closed-off from reality and moving backwards.  Sharon’s respectful and deliberative approach to governing will give City Hall the reality check it needs to get back on track.”

Davis’ political troubles grew exponentially last year when he decided to drop Chiaravalloti from the Assembly ticket.  Chiaravalloti had played a major role in Davis’ victory against incumbent Mark Smith in the 2014 mayoral race.  Now much of Davis’ local opposition came from a faction allied with Chiaravalloti, who would have been backing Davis for re-election.

Ashe-Nadrowski had also been a Davis ally in the last election.

Cuseglio had also served as a top advisor to Hudson County Democratic Chair Amy DeGise.  Her father, Bayonne Republican Municipal Chairman Vincent Cuseglio, is backing Davis.

“As someone who grew up in Bayonne and got involved in local politics at a very young age, I know how much a difference City government makes in people’s lives,” stated Cuseglio. “Government should serve others, but the current administration has proven time and time again that they only serve themselves.  Sharon’s run for Mayor isn’t just about an election, it’s about making Bayonne residents the priority of City government once again.”

Casais, a Republican, was Davis’ chief of staff from 2014 to 2017.  He is now the Roselle Park borough administrator and municipal clerk.

Casais and Cuseglio run Crossing Aisles Consulting, a political and governmental consulting firm.

Davis, Ashe-Nadrowski, and school board member Michael Alonso, are running in the May non-partisan election.
