The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s foremost LGBTQ+ equality organization, endorsed Gov. Phil Murphy for a second term today.

“Governor Phil Murphy is a national leader in advancing rights and protections for LGBTQ+ people,” said HRC Senior Vice President JoDee Winterhof in a statement. “Murphy has placed equality front and center to ensure LGBTQ+ New Jerseyans can live in safety and thrive. The Human Rights Campaign is proud to endorse Governor Murphy as he leads New Jersey toward fulfilling the promise of full equality for all.”

The HRC’s endorsement is a repeat of 2017, when they endorsed Murphy over former Lieutenant Gov. Kim Guadagno.

Both gubernatorial candidates this year have worked to cast themselves as allies of the LGBTQ+ community, but Murphy has gone after Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli for comments he made in July about teaching “sodomy” in schools – comments that the HRC indirectly referenced in their endorsement.

“The re-election of Governor Murphy is crucial given the discriminatory rhetoric, record, and policy proposals put forth by his anti-equality opponent Jack Ciattarelli, whose vote against marriage equality and vow to eliminate the state’s LGBTQ+-inclusive curriculum make him a dangerous choice for the future of New Jersey,” Winterhof said.
