Assemblyman Michale Torrissi, Jr.  (R-Hammonton) disclosed today that he had been battling cancer since earlier this year and has now beaten the disease.

“For the past six months, I’ve had surgery and multiple procedures while dealing with cancer,” Torrissi said.  “While I am a private individual and have not been very public about my cancer, I am thrilled to share the good news that after my last visit to the doctor, I am officially cancer free.”

Torrissi said that his cancer has forced him to take some time off from the Assembly and from his bid for re-election to a second term in the 8th legislative district.

“I’m excited to get back to focusing my full attention on being the best representative to this district that I can be,” he said.

In a statement, Torrissi expressed his appreciation to those who have offered “private support while I’ve been dealing with one of the toughest battles of my life.”

“Countless people have reached out to me with loving messages, and I will forever be grateful for that,” stated Torrissi.

The freshman assemblyman said he was fortunate to have great doctors “who caught this early,” and offered some advice to others.

“It’s always the right move to go to seek care as soon as something feels wrong. Care for yourself and your family and friends,” Torrissi said.  “If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t! I know so many of you are struggling or have struggled through this terrible disease, and I am so proud of you for fighting it.”

And he acknowledged that while he was in a position to easily change his schedule to accommodate appointments for tests and treatment, it’s not so easy for everyone.

“We need to help each other out and make sure we create an environment where everyone can take the time they need to care for their bodies and minds,” said Torrissi.
