Newar City Councilmen Anibal Ramos, Jr. Luis Quintana and Carlos Gonzalez have endorsed Renee Burgess for the open State Senate seat in the 28th district.

Burgess, the Irvington Council President, is the front-runner to succeed State Sen. Ronald Rice (D-Newark) in a special election convention set for tomorrow evening.   So far, no other candidate has entered the race.

“I am so excited to endorse Irvington Council President Renee Burgess. I have worked with her as members of the Joint Meeting of Essex and Union Counties, and I know firsthand she has the desire to serve our community,” said Ramos, the North Ward councilman.  “Renee Burgess has the experience that we need in our next state senator, and I ask District 28 to join me in supporting her.”

Quintana said  that Burgess “knows what it takes to help municipal governments.”

“Renee will be our voice in Trenton to help our residents and bring local perspective to the laws being drafted in the Senate,” he said.

Gonzalez called Burgess “a brilliant public servant” and cited her experience as a councilwoman and school board member.

“Her career has prepared her to represent the residents of the 28th Legislative district,” Gonzalez said.  “I passionately support Renee Burgess as our next state senator.”

The 28th district includes a small part of Newark’s North and Central wards.

Rice, the West Ward Democratic municipal chair, is backing Assemblywoman Cleopatra Tucker (D-Newark), but Tucker has still not said if she will seek the post on Friday.

Burgess already has endorsements from Irvington and Bloomfield.
