South Jersey Dems spent close to $100,000 on anti-Del Borrello material

South Jersey Democrats’ efforts to damage former Washington Township Councilman Chris Del Borrello’s State Senate primary campaign have cost them almost $100,000, according to campaign finance reports released by the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC).

According to a 48-hour ELEC report filed on June 2 and released yesterday, the political action committee American Representative Democracy – the new name for Democratic power broker George Norcross’s PAC – spent $65,000 on “mixed media” attacking Del Borrello and another $14,360 on direct mail. An earlier 48-hour report filed on May 27 lists another $14,360 spent on direct mail.

All told, that means South Jersey Democrats have spent at least $93,720 on their campaign – and the true total may be higher, since some expenditures might be recent enough that they haven’t yet been reported.

The spending appears to be aimed at hobbling Del Borrello in his primary race against Gloucester County Commissioner Nick DeSilvio (R-Franklin), who is more conservative than Del Borrello and whom Democrats evidently see as a weaker general election candidate.

Even with the Democratic meddling, Del Borrello is still in a good position to win today’s election. That’s not necessarily terrible news for Democrats, though; if Del Borrello wins the nomination, Democrats will undoubtedly spend hundreds of thousands more to defeat him in the highly competitive district, so the $100,000 they’ve already spent just means they’re getting a headstart.
