Cornell: ‘The future of abortion access is at stake’

Planned Parenthood’s New Jersey super PAC is sending out 153,000 mailers to federal election year voters in the competitive 3rd, 4th, 11th, 16th, and 38th districts today in an attempt to galvanize voters who might be motivated by the abortion issue in this year’s off-year, low-turnout election.

“In New Jersey, the future of abortion access is at stake,” said Jackie Cornell, trustee of Planned Parenthood NJ Super PAC and the executive director of Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey. “We cannot be complacent: just one election can undo the years of progress our state has made when it comes to protecting and expanding our reproductive freedom.”

A sample mailer features the banner “Abortion is Under Attack” above headlines of state-level abortion restrictions across the country. The mailer argues that similar policies that would outlaw abortion could come to New Jersey – if Democrats lose this year.

The mailer then spotlights the Democrats running in the 11th district – State Sen. Vin Gopal (D-Long Branch) and Assembly candidates Margie Donlon and Luanne Peterpaul – as pivotal to ensuring New Jerseyans maintain access to abortion care.

These candidates are labeled as “health champions.”

In September, Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey (PPAF-NJ) endorsed the 11th district Democrats and all Democratic candidates in the 3rd, 4th, 16th, and 38th — where voters will be receiving mailers today.

Today’s mailer is also the Super PAC’s second; they sent one in late September to competitive district voters who were more likely to vote by mail. That mailer reached 66,000 doors.

Democrats across the state, especially in competitive districts, are increasingly laser-focused on abortion access as the pivotal issue in this year’s election.
