Legislature postpones sessions under blizzard threat

Both chambers of New Jersey’s state Legislature postponed sessions scheduled for Monday as a huge snowstorm bears down on the state.

The state Senate and Assembly had been set to meet at 1 p.m. on Monday; the sessions will now be held on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

All 21 counties are under a blizzard warning for the first time in three decades, Gov. Mikie Sherrill said today. The National Weather Service projects Trenton will experience between 18 and 24 inches of snow. Parts of the Shore, particularly Ocean and Monmouth counties, are expected to see even more.

Sherrill said NJ Transit will suspend all buses, light rail, and Access Link at 6 p.m. She said they expect to suspend commuter rail sometime tonight. Sherrill announced a 35 MPH statewide speed limit on state highways and interstates, taking effect at 3 p.m.

The storm has frozen the state’s politics on Sunday and Monday — the Hunterdon County Democratic Convention postponed its convention by a week.

The governor said there is a 90% chance that a foot of snow blankets the entire state.
