Thomas Kean, Jr. has received the unanimous endorsement of Senate Republicans for re-election as Minority Leader.

Kean, the Senate Republican leader since 2008, is challenging freshman Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Rocky Hill) in New Jersey’s 7th district next year.

“As we begin the 2020-2021 legislative session, Senator Kean’s continued leadership will be critical to the success of our efforts to hold Governor Murphy and the Democratic legislative majorities accountable,” Kean’s fourteen GOP colleagues wrote, including State Sen.-elect Michael Testa, Jr. (R-Vineland).

Testa won Tuesday’s only State Senate race – flipping the 1st district seat back to the Republicans for the first time in twelve years.

Kean played a pivotal role in Testa’s successful challenge to State Sen. Bob Andrzejczak (D-Middle) in a special election for an unexpired term.

The Senate now returns to a 25-15 majority.  The GOP lost a seat earlier this year when State Sen. Dawn Addiego (D-Evesham) switched parties.

“We remain committed to a caucus advancing our Every Child Counts school funding plan to improve the quality of education for every student, improving New Jersey Transit and critical infrastructure, and pursuing structural reforms to make government more efficient and New Jersey more affordable,” the senators said.

If Kean wins his congressional race, it will trigger an election for a new Minority Leader.

There will be at least once addition to the Senate leadership team.

The death of State Sen. Anthony R. Bucco in September creates an opening for a new Minority Conference Chairman.
