Assemblymen Robert Karabinchak (D-Edison) and Sterley Stanley (D-East Brunswick) have won re-election in the 18th legislative district, the New Jersey Globe projects, after a peaceful election cycle in the Democratic-leaning district.
As of 10:19 p.m. and with most of the vote counted, Karabinchak and Stanley have a combined 64% of the vote; their Republican challengers, South Plainfield Councilwoman Melanie McCann Mott and podiatrist Eugene DeMarzo, have 36%.
Karabinchak arrived in Trenton in 2016, after Patrick Diegnan (D-South Plainfield) was elevated to the State Senate. Stanley was elected in 2021 to succeed now-Middlesex County Clerk Nancy Pinkin; he’s the first Asian American to represent the 18th district, which has a larger Asian American population than any other district in the state.
The two assemblymen faced no primary challenge this year – one Steve Fulop-aligned challenger, Edison police lieutenant David Tingle, withdrew after his petition signatures were challenged – and Republicans made no effort to flip their seats.
