Gopal now has big lead, GOP Assembly candidates still ahead

The State Senate race in the 11th district appears to be over, with Democratic incumbent Gopal (D-Long Branch) amassing a 2,576-vote lead over Republican Lori Annetta.

But the race for two Assembly seats in the Monmouth-based district has now tightened, with Assemblywoman Joann Downey (D-Freehold) now trailing by just 376 votes against Republicans Marilyn Piperno and Kimberly Eulner.

Piperno leads the field with 34,497 votes, followed by Eulner with 34,341.  Downey has 33,96 votes, and Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling (D-Neptune) is in fourth place with 33,708 – 257 votes behind his running mate.

While the path for the Democrats to pick up one Assembly seat is narrow, the ability to keep both is improbable.  Monmouth County has just a handful of uncounted vote-by-mail ballots – some that came in late today and an unknown number that may arrive by Monday.  There are also an estimated 1,200 provisional ballots that won’t be counted until next week.

Gopal was 490 votes down on election night.

Final 11th district results:

Gopal 51.9% // Annetta 48.1%

Piperno 25.1%, Eulner 24.9% // Downey 24.7%, Houghtaling 24.5% // Faison 0.8%
