Durr opposes Glassboro-Camden Line; Democratic SuperPAC calls Durr an extremist on abortion

State Sen. Ed Durr (R-Logan) today came out as fully opposed to the proposed Glassboro-Camden Line (GCL), after Gov. Phil Murphy voiced his support for the project earlier this week.

“No serious public servant could support this GCL project in good faith. I won’t stand here and watch special interests pull the strings of Phil Murphy and John Burzichelli while getting rich off my constituents,” said Durr. “Sometimes being in elected office is hard, but balancing a project with zero public demand and massive taxpayer-funded price tag is pretty easy: no thanks.”

The 18-mile proposed line would connect Gloucester and Camden counties, going from the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden to Glassboro, including stops in towns such as Gloucester City, Pitman, and Woodbury. Durr has been a fierce opponent of the proposed line, voicing concerns over the impact on local communities and noise pollution.

“It is time for fresh solutions and a new approach,” Durr added.

Durr would like to see the line extend down Route 55 to cover a larger geographical area, or to expand Route 55 and implement a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

Democrats, however, believe that Durr is vulnerable – especially on abortion, and they are trying to paint him as an extremist.

Abortion mailer

The American Representative Majority, a Democratic SuperPAC with ties to South Jersey Democrats, is sending mailers out that highlight Durr’s use of inflammatory language to voice his opposition to abortion.

The mailer features a Facebook post in which Durr says, “A woman does have a choice. Keep her legs closed!”

Democrats are hoping this will motivate their base in an election cycle when ballots headed by state legislative candidates produce traditionally low turnout.

South Jersey Democrats are trying to show that they still have political muster after shocking defeats in 2021, when Durr ousted then-Senate President Steve Sweeney.

Abortion, Democrats believe, is pivotal to regaining ground in South Jersey and throughout the state. Last week, Planned Parenthood Action Fund of New Jersey endorsed 97 Democrats, including Durr’s opponent, former Assemblyman John Burzichelli.
