Mitchelle Drulis has won the endorsement of Somerset County Democratic Chairman Peg Schaffer, effectively ending any speculation that there would be a last-minute candidate to block her ascent to the Democratic nomination for State Assembly in the 16th district.
Drulis, a former district director to Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) and chief of staff Joe Egan (D-New Brunswick), has already won organization lines in Hunterdon and Mercer counties and is unopposed in Middlesex.
The incumbent, Assemblywoman Sadaf Jaffer (D-Montgomery), unexpectedly announced in January that she would not seek re-election to a second term.
“It is encouraging to see such a depth of talent within the district giving us a strong bench for future county and district elections,” said Schaffer.
Drulis is set to run with State Sen. Andrew Zwicker (D-South Brunswick) and Assemblyman Roy Freiman (D-Hillsborough).
If she wins the general election, Drulis would become the first Democratic assemblywoman from Hunterdon County since Barbara McConnell (D-Flemington) left after two terms to run for governor in 1981.
