Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin and Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez announced they would run for reelection Tuesday.
“I am excited to announce my re-election campaign with Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez in 2019 to continue representing the 19th legislative district,” Coughlin said in a post on Facebook. “Together, we have brought the district more than $100 million dollars over the next seven years in property tax relief and secured the financing of various priority projects throughout the district.”
There’s little risk of the two incumbents losing. Coughlin has represented the district since 2010, and he has leadership money at his back.
Lopez is a relative newcomer. She joined the Assembly last year after former Assemblyman John Wisniewski’s unsuccessful run for governor left the seat open.
But, neither of them faces much risk. The last time a Republican represented the district was in 2003, when Arline Friscia switched parties after losing the backing of the Middlesex County Democratic Organization.
Friscia was ousted later that year.
