Democratic Assembly candidates Lisa Bhimani and Darcy Draeger are suspending their campaign for at least the next few days as residents of the 25th legislative district mourn the loss of longtime State Sen. Anthony R. Bucco (R-Boonton).
Bucco, a Republican State senator since 1998, died on Monday after suffering a heart attack. He was 81. His son, Assemblyman Anthony M. Bucco (R-Boonton) is currently facing a tough re-election campaign against Bhimani and Draeger.
“Our hearts go out to Assemblyman Bucco and his family following the passing of his father, Senator Anthony Bucco,” said Bhimani, who won 48% of the vote against Bucco in the 2017 general election. “Senator Bucco was a dedicated representative who leaves behind a lasting legacy of more than 50-years of public service — a model for all those who serve our state.”
Right now, it’s not immediately clear whether Assemblyman Bucco will continue his campaign for a sixth term in the State Assembly, or drop out and replace his father in the New Jersey Senate. That leaves Democrats with genuine uncertainties about their opponents in an election that is just 48 days away.
“Out of respect for Senator Bucco we will be putting our campaign on hold,” said Draeger. “There is a time for politics and that time is not now. We mourn this tremendous loss with all of New Jersey and send our sincere condolences to Assemblyman Bucco and his family.”
