Greenwald applauds Murphy top court nomination

Smoke signals from South Jersey Democrats?

Assembly Majority Leader Louis Greenwald became the first South Jersey Democrat to weigh in on the nomination of Rachel Wainer Apter to the New Jersey Supreme Court, praising Gov. Phil Murphy for his pick.

While Greenwald has no vote on Senate confirmation, he is a key member of the South Jersey Democratic team and his comments might signal some support for the top court choice.

“For the last four years, as the Trump Administration sowed divisiveness and civil discord, Rachel Wainer Apter stood out as a strong voice for fairness and equality for all,” said Greenwald, the senior member of the State Assembly. “As Director of the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights, Ms. Wainer Apter worked tirelessly to battle against all forms of bigotry and hatred, and I am confident she will continue to be a staunch advocate for all of New Jersey’s nine million residents.”

This is Murphy’s second Supreme Court nomination.

His first, Fabiana Pierre-Louis, a former federal prosecutor from South Jersey, was unanimously confirmed by the State Senate last year.
