The following statements were made on the passing of former Assemblyman Albert Coutinho:

ESSEX COUNTY EXECUTIVE JOSEPH DIVINCENZO

“I am truly saddened by the passing of Albert Coutinho. He was a giant in Essex County and the Portuguese community and was known for dedicating himself to the development of youth soccer programs and helping others in the community that he loved. More importantly, he was devoted to his family and was a true friend. My heart goes out to his family.”

U.S. SENATOR CORY BOOKER

“Assemblyman Albert Coutinho was not just a great Jersey leader, but a dear friend. He was a man whose life was defined by service, compassion, and community. From coaching countless kids in the Ironbound to leading with heart in our Statehouse, he was a servant in every sense. His generosity and devotion touched so many. My prayers are with his family and all who loved him.”

FORMER GOVERNOR PHIL MURPHY AND FORMER FIRST LADY TAMMY MURPHY

“We are heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of our friend, former Assemblyman Al Coutinho, following a car crash in Newark earlier this morning.

“Al was an extraordinary person whose generosity, kindness, and commitment to others left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. He dedicated his career to expanding access to soccer, ensuring more young people had the opportunity to learn, play, and grow The Beautiful Game, especially in the Ironbound. His passion for soccer was matched only by his dedication to his family, friends, and the Portuguese American community of New Jersey.

“We fondly remember watching the FIFA Club World Cup Final with him just last summer. He was as good a guy as you could imagine and our prayers are with his loved ones and all who were fortunate enough to know him.”

STATE SENATOR DECLAN O’SCANLON

“This is tragic. Al was a wonderful person. Smart, funny, loyal friend. The people of New Jersey lost when he left the legislature. The world has lost now that he’s left it.”

KEARNY COUNCILMAN JOSE RODRIQUES

“Al was more than just a colleague in public service; he was a pillar of the Luso-American community and a man whose roots in Newark ran deep. Born to Maria and Bernardino Coutinho, trailblazers who set a standard for leadership, Al carried that torch with grace and an unwavering commitment to Newark & the East Ward.  To Al’s family and friends: you are in my thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.  Rest in peace, Al. Your spirit will live on in the streets of the Ironbound and in the hearts of everyone you touched; we will continue the legacy set by you and your father.  Take a moment today to hug your family and friends, we never know what tomorrow brings.”

ESSEX COUNTY COMMISSIONER PAT SEBOLD

“Alberto Coutinho was a special individual, and his love of soccer lasted right until his final days! Many times, I presented him with soccer resolutions at our Commissioner meetings. My condolences go to his whole family on this terrible tragedy.”

SENATE MINORITY LEADER ANTHONY BUCCO

“I’m saddened to learn of the tragic passing of my friend and former Assemblyman Al Coutinho.  We spent a lot of time working together on the Assembly Commerce and Economic Development Committee and the New Jersey Economic Opportunity Act to help jump start New Jersey’s economy.  What always stood out about Al was how much he genuinely cared about Jersey and doing right by the Garden State.

“This is a tremendous loss for the community. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and everyone who loved him.”

ASSEMBLY SPEAKER CRAIG COUGHLIN

“Heartbroken to learn of the passing of former Assemblyman Albert Coutinho. A proud son of Newark and an indelible force in getting the Economic Opportunity Act of 2013 into law, he brought passion and pragmatism to our caucus. Tish and I are keeping his family and friends in our prayers.”

ESSEX COUNTY CLERK CHRISTOPHER DURKIN

“I am heartbroken by the tragic death of Al Coutinho. Al was all heart and soul. He loved people; all people. His passion for America, the Portuguese community, and the beautiful game of soccer was only outshined by his love for his wonderful family. My heart goes out to his family.”

STATE SENATOR BENJIE WIMBERLY

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Assemblyman Albert Coutinho this weekend. His loss is felt not only by those who had the honor of serving alongside him, but by the many communities he so faithfully represented.

“Albert and I served together on the Budget Committee, where he distinguished himself as a thoughtful, disciplined, and principled leader. As an alumnus Assemblyman, he exemplified the enduring truth that public office may be temporary, but a commitment to public service is lifelong. Even beyond his time in elected office, he remained dedicated to advancing the well-being of others.

“He was instrumental in championing meaningful initiatives, including his steadfast support for the revitalization of Hinchliffe Stadium, an achievement that will stand as part of his lasting legacy. Albert approached his work with both purpose and heart, always mindful of the people behind the policies.

“Beyond his public service, he was a devoted brother, a loyal friend, and a man of deep personal conviction. He also had a genuine passion for soccer, proudly supporting the Cosmos and looking forward with excitement to the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

“Albert Coutinho will be remembered for his integrity, his compassion, and his unwavering dedication to serving others. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
