Richard DiLucia, who served as mayor of Monroe Township for four years until losing re-election last year, died on August 10. He was 84.
DiLucia had been elected as a Democrat in 2018 but switched parties last year after it became clear that he would not get the Gloucester County Democratic organization line for a second term. Republicans had touted his party switch as a signal that the county was turning red, but DiLucia lost the GOP primary to off-the-line challenger Samuel Miles by a 72%-28% margin.
A former AFSCME Local 1099 vice president and South Jersey AFSCME area director, DiLucia spent ten years as a councilman before ousting Mayor Daniel Teefy by a 47%-40% margin in the 2018 Democratic primary. DiLucia had the organization line.
His wife, Anna Maria, died in 2021. DiLucia is survived by his four children and five grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on August 16 from 10 AM to noon at the Gardner Funeral Home in Runnemede, with a memorial service to follow.
