Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss issued the following statement on the death of Rep. Donald Payne, Jr.:

“With my deepest condolences, I pay tribute to the late Rep. Donald M. Payne Jr. His passing on April 24, 2024, marks a profound loss for our community and the nation as a whole. Rep. Payne Jr. was not only a dedicated public servant but a champion of social justice, equality, and the well-being of all individuals. His immense likability, effectiveness, and unwavering commitment to progressive ideals have left an indelible mark on our society. Rep. Payne Jr.’s legacy extends beyond his legislative achievements. He was instrumental in driving initiatives to fund clean drinking water projects, leading to significant improvements in infrastructure across the nation. His advocacy for reducing community gun violence and his support for vital legislation such as the Build Back Better Act and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act underscore his tireless pursuit of a more just and equitable society for all.
“May his memory be a blessing, and may his spirit guide us in our continued pursuit of a better tomorrow.”
