New Jersey Institute for Social Justice President Ryan Haygood issued the following statement on the death of Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr.:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Congressman Donald Payne Jr.
“Congressman Payne was a great partner to me and the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice.
“He led New Jersey’s only majority-Black congressional district with a heart full of love for its people and their needs.
“He was a constant presence in the district – from attending council meetings, to having a regular feature on local radio, to interacting with constituents on the streets. You could find him in the community passing batons to graduates; fighting for reparations on City Hall’s steps and pushing for democracy and police accountability in DC.
“We send our heartfelt condolences and love to his wife, triplets and colleagues as they mourn the loss of a true champion.”
