Assemblyman Gary Schaer has issued the following statement on the death of Rep. Donald Payne, Jr.:
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Congressman Payne Jr. His commitment and service to Newark and the district, constituents, New Jersey, and the country at large were remarkable. While at first thought we may think of the iconic fashion sense and bow tie, years to come he will be remembered for his ability to bring communities together, his steadfast commitment to combating gun violence, to addressing infrastructure struggles, and to eliminating hate. New Jersey is better off from having him in Congress. A true public servant, may his memory be a blessing. “
