Longtime Cresskill mayor dies

Cresskill Mayor Benedict Romeo passed away today.  He was 77.

Romeo, a Republican, has been mayor since 1999.

His death will necessitate special primary and general elections this year to fill his unexpired term, which ends on December 31, 2027.  Cresskill Republicans will submit three names as an interim successor, who may pick one of them.

The current borough council is split: three Democrats and three Republicans.  One incumbent of each party is up for re-election this year.
