John F. Murphy, who was elected to the Englewood Cliffs Borough Council in 1993 after 40 years with the local police department, passed away on March 8.  He was 93.

He was the Englewood Cliffs police chief from 1977 to 1993.

Murphy was appointed to the council in 1993 to fill the vacancy created when E. Carter Corriston resigned after 19 years as a councilman to become a trustee of Bergen County Community College.

He was narrowly elected to a full three-year term in November 1993, running on a Democratic ticket with Frank Sorrentino.  Murphy (1,192 votes) and Sorrento (1,174 votes) defeated Republicans James Bancroft (1,160) and Roger Wasik (1,180).

Murphy was easily re-elected in 1996 and won in 1999 by a 2-1 margin.

His political career ended in 2002 when he resigned to move to Park Ridge.
