In Memoriam

Anna Bruno, who served as a secretary on the staff of Rep. Henry Helstoski (D-East Rutherford), died on March 12.  She was 94.

William G. Miller, who was the president of the North Hunterdon Regional Board of Education in the 1980s, died on March 4.  He was 90.  Miller played football at Ebbets Field as a young man, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, worked as an archivist at Rutgers University, participated in the anti-war and civil rights movements of the 1960s, and attended the March on Washington when Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial.  He later lived on a commune run by David Dellinger, a member of the Chicago Seven.

Paul Mallon, who served as a Bernards township committeeman from 1977 to 1980, died on February 26.  He was 96.  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, as a Bernards school board member from 1971 to 1972 and as deputy mayor.   His wife, Helen Ross Mallon, a former Bernards Public Library president, died last October at age 93.

Mort Dicker, a former Rockaway Township councilman, died on February 23.  He was 91.  A Legal Aid Society staff attorney and U.S. Army veteran, Dicker was also a longtime Rockaway Planning Board member.

Armenio Monteiro, a leader in Elizabeth’s Portuguese community, died om  March 10.  He was 91.  Monteiro was the father of former Elizabeth Municipal Court Judge Nelson Monteiro and former Elizabeth school board member Tony Monteiro.

John M. Renna, a former Essex County sheriff’s officer and Manasquan Chamber of Commerce president, died on March 14.  He was 76.  He was the nephew of John P. Renna, a former Essex County GOP Chairman and New Jersey Commissioner of Community Affairs.

Barbara Steuert, who served on the Glen Rock Board of Education for 28 years, died on March 8.  She was 75.  Steuart was a Democratic county committeewoman.

John Price, a former East Greenwich Zoning board member and Mt. Royal Fire chief, died on March 7.  He was 82.

Dottie Berenato, who spent fifteen years as chair of the William B. Kessler Memorial Hospital Foundation in Hammonton, died on March 6.  She was 88.  Berenato was a trustee of the New Jersey Hospital Association and chaired the Atlantic County Human Services Advisory Council.

Christalla Likos, who worked as an Essex County court clerk, died on March 4.  She was 74.

Doris Klaus Spergel, who spent 18 years working for the mayor and several commissioners at
Nutley Town Hall, died on February 16 after an 8-year battle with Alzheimer’s and dementia.  She was 94.

Gloria Santa who worked for the Parsippany Public Works Department for more than 30 years, died on March 9.  She was 95.
