James O’Connell, who spent eleven years as a judge of the New Jersey Workers Compensation Court, died on August 13. He was 90. A Korean War veteran, O’Connell was a Newark police officer in the early 1950s and worked for the Essex County Probation Department while going to law school. Gov. Brendan Byrne nominated him to his judgeship in 1978.
Michael Sauter, a former Washington Township councilman and Gloucester County Board of Elections official, died on August 10. He was 63. He served as chairman on the Washington Township Zoning Board.
John Finlayson, a former Merchantville school board member, died on August 3. He was 80.
George Gross, a former president of the Bass River Board of Education, died on August 6. He was 86. Gross was a Methodist pastor and U.S. Navy veteran who served on a destroyer ship during the Korean War.
John Pierantozzi, who served on the planning and zoning boards in Vineland, died on August 11. He was 80.
