Marilyn Rhyne Herr, the first woman to serve as a Superior Court Judge in Hunterdon County, died on July 22. She was 86. Gov. Tom Kean nominated her to the bench in 1989 and she served until her retirement in 2004.
Sylvia Walker, a former Bayonne Board of Education member, died on August 2. She was 95. A survivor of Kristallnacht before emigrating to the United States in 1939, Walker went to college after raising her family and was a fellow at the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers in 1977. She also served ad chair of the Bayonne Environmental Commission.
Frederick Werner III, who served as a school board member in Liberty Township from 1980 to 1993 and on the Great Meadows Regional Board of Education from 1996, died on July 30. He was 71.
Ruth Greschak, who had been U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s cub scout leader, died on August 1. She was 94.
