Robert McDevitt, who at age 28 was elected mayor of Avon in 1978, died on December 25. He was 70. McDevitt also served on the Avon Board of Education.
Thomas McKenzie, who was elected to the Bloomingdale Borough Council in 1974 and became Council President in 1976, died on December 22. He was 85. After completing 41 years as a public school teacher, McKenzie headed a Family Readiness Group for the Jersey City Armory Unit of the New Jersey National Guard, offering support services for troops deployed to Iraq.
Cecelia Schaefer, a former Ocean Gate councilwoman who worked for the Ocean County Clerk’s office and was a member of the Republican Club, died on December 23. She was 87.
William Hodges, who served as a Somerdale councilman, died on December 23. He was 97. Hodges was a U.S. Army veteran.
Gus Herrmann, a former Manasquan councilman, died on December 17. He was 84.
William Sooy, a former Tuckerton school board president, died on December 25. He was 85. Sooy was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran.
Carol James a former Democratic county committeewoman from Carteret, died on December 23. She was 85.
James Rogers, a former Mercer County Democratic committeeman from Hamilton, died on December 18. He was 81. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served on the executive board of the Trenton and Hamilton YMCAs.
Marion Seemer, a former Hillside Republican Club secretary, died on December 24. She was 88.
Robert Weber, who served on the Fredon Township Zoning Board, died on December 23. He was 91.
