Millie Sutter, who served as a legal secretary to her uncle, Union City Municipal Court Judge A. Michael Lepore in the 1930s, died on May 10. She was 103.  Sutter later worked for Bergen County Prosecutor Guy Calissi.

Elisa Hartpence, who spent 32 years as an executive assistant for the State of New Jersey working for two governors and nine attorneys general, died on May 14.  She was 87.

Thelma Lee Keiser, who went to work at age 70 as a sexual assault nurse examiner for the Union County Prosecutor’s office, died on May 15.  She was 88. Keiser retired from the prosecutor’s office in 2015.

Joan McLaughlin Flatley, who served on the Jersey City Commission for the Welfare of Developmentally Challenged Children under Mayor John V. Kenny, died on May 7.  She was 91.  Known as “Mama Joan,” Flatley was the mother of John McLaughlin, who served as deputy assistant secretary of state under Gov. Jim Florio, and Marie McLaughlin Cascone, who chaired Mercer County Democratic Women for Florio in 1989.

Michael Romano, a former Farmingdale councilman, died on May 15.  He was 77.  Romano was a retired Bayonne Fire Department battalion chief.

Ken Porch, a former mayor of Oldmans, died on May 12.  He was 80.

Charlie Newman, a former chairman of the Union County Advisory Board for the Disabled, died on May 13.  He was 63.  He became a quadriplegic at age 16 when he broke his neck during a Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School football game, and later spent his career working for the New Jersey Division of Vocational and Rehabilitation Services.

John French, a former Bergenfield Planning Board chairman, died on May 13.
