Canning Roger Childs, Jr., a direct descendant of former New Jersey Gov. John Reading, died on March 13. He was 85. Reading began his political career at age 32 when he was named to the state provincial council in 1718, and became acting governor in for extended periods on three occasions in the 1740s and 1750s.
John Redding, a banker who testified before the United States Senate during the Iran-Contra Affairs, died on March 15. He was 81. Redding was a U.S. Army veteran.
