Peter Van Steyn, a former Franklin Township (Gloucester) committeeman, died on February 21. He was 81.
He was 30-years-old when he was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the township committee in 1967. The incumbent, Democrat Carl Bowman, resigned to become an assistant Gloucester County prosecutor.
He lost a special election that year for Bowman’s unexpired term to Republican Charles Edmunds by 266 votes. Democratic Mayor Americo Antonelli was also defeated for re-election by his predecessor, James Peretti.
Van Steyn won a 1968 rematch when he defeated Edmunds by 369 votes (55%).
He did not seek re-election in 1971.
