Award-winning journalist dies

Joan Lowell Smith, a former syndicated columnist for the Newhouse News Service and the winner of seventeen journalism awards, died on April 9.  She was 85.  She served as executive director of the Westfield Chamber of Commerce and as an aide to assemblyman Chuck Hardwick.

Alexander Borden Iler, the Eatontown municipal court judge in the 1980s, passed away on April 2.  He was 87.  Iler was a U.S. Air Force veteran who served in the 81st Air Rescue Squadron during the Korean War.
