Former Senate President gets backing of third South Jersey county

Former Senate President Steve Sweeney tonight won the Cumberland County Democratic convention, giving him the use of the organization slogan in the June 10 gubernatorial primary.

Party leaders voted 25-16 to accept a recommendation of support for Sweeney.

This is Sweeney’s third convention victory; he won votes in Burlington and Atlantic counties earlier this month.

“I’m honored to have the backing of the Cumberland County Democrats, and I promise to always have their back,” Sweeney said.  “Our campaign is resonating with voters because I’m talking about the issues that matter most, and I’m not treating South Jersey as an afterthought – something that’s all too common when decisions are made in Trenton.”

Sweeney represented part of Cumberland County in the State Senate from 2002 to 2022.

“As Governor, I’ll make sure Cumberland has a seat at the table. With Cumberland County’s support, we’re just that much closer to cutting taxes for seniors, energy diversity to lower costs, and providing a one-time $400 check so New Jerseyans can get by in the economy Trump is destroying,” he said.  “We’ve still got plenty of work to do, and I look forward to earning every single vote along the way.”
