Gov. Mikie Sherrill will nominate labor lawyer Kevin Jarvis as Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development.

Jarvis served as the chief of staff at the department during Gov. Jon Corzine’s administration.  He began his career as a research associate in the Assembly Minority Office from 1994 to 1998, and then as a legislative affairs coordinator at the New Jersey State AFL-CIO from 1998 to 2001.

“Kevin’s depth of experience advocating for the rights of New Jersey’s workers makes him an ideal candidate to serve as New Jersey’s Labor Commissioner,” Sherrill stated.  “As we look to create more opportunities for New Jerseyans to find great jobs and get ahead, Kevin’s experience will be invaluable in helping us strengthen resources available to our communities.”

He later worked at Wilentz, Goldman & Spritzer during a time when the firm held enormous statewide political influence.  Jarvis has been a partner at O’Brien, Belland & Bushinsky since 2010.

Jarvis’ father is a lifelong member of IAM Local 1812 in Vineland.

“New Jersey is the epicenter of innovation, and I look forward to working with Governor Sherrill to cultivate a workforce ready to respond to our evolving employment landscape,” said Jarvis.

Jarvis succeeds Rob Asarao-Angelo, who held the labor commissioner post through the entirety of Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration.
