SEIU State Council backs Sherrill for governor

Chambers says Democrat will ‘fight for democracy, preserve civility, and strengthen the voice of working people’

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) has picked up the endorsement of the SEIU New Jersey State Council, which comes with boots on the ground and financial support as she seeks to keep the governorship in Democratic hands after term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy leaves office.

“New Jersey’s working families deserve a Governor who will champion justice, opportunity, and the dignity of every person,” said Megan Chambers, President of the SEIU NJ State Council and Co-Manager of the LDFS Joint Board, Workers United SEIU. “In Mikie Sherrill, we see a leader with a clear vision for protecting our civil liberties, defending our democracy, and ensuring immigrant communities are treated with humanity and respect.”

The State Council and 32BJ SEIU are not part of the same operation.  32BJ joined a progressive coalition that backed Newark Mayor Ras Baraka for the Democratic nomination for governor in the primary two weeks ago.   The union was an early supporter of Murphy’s first bid for governor in 2018.

“New Jersey needs a Governor who’s going to stand up for everyday people—someone who listens, who leads with common sense, and who doesn’t back down from doing what’s right,” said Chambers.  “The SEIU NJ State Council believes Mikie Sherrill is the leader New Jersey can count on to fight for democracy, preserve civility, and strengthen the voice of working people. We are proud to support her in this important gubernatorial campaign.”

The SEIU NJ State Council is composed of unions representing service employees across the state, including health care, warehouse, laundry, and school cafeteria workers, with a diverse membership that includes motor vehicle inspectors, resident physicians, and municipal employees in Newark. The union’s state council includes 1199 SEIU Healthcare Workers East, Laundry, Distribution and Food Service Joint Board of Workers United, The Committee of Interns and Residents, and 32BJ Motor Vehicle Inspectors.
