Gov. Phil Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy are spending some time with Rahm Emanuel during their visit to Japan and were guests at a small dinner Emanuel held at the Ambassador’s residence in Tokyo last night for former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Emanuel served as a Clinton White House staffer, congressman, White House Chief of Staff under Barack Obama, and mayor of Chicago before President Biden nominated him as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan.

Earlier today, Emanuel attended a roundtable with the Murphy’s to discuss clean energy and infrastructure issues sponsored by GCM Grosvenor.

Murphy and Emanuel are old friends.  In remarks at the roundtable, the governor commented that a bottle of whiskey the Ambassador had sent to him was in his hotel room upon his arrival in Tokyo.

This morning, Murphy met with Furukawa Electric, a Japanese clean energy company, and Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida.

“Many New Jerseyans work out of Sony’s U.S. headquarters in midtown Manhattan,” Murphy said.  “We look forward to Sony growing its presence in the tri-state area.”

The Governor and First Lady began their day in Tokyo day with an early morning with members of the New Jersey delegation, including McCarter & English partner Guillermo Artiles, his former assistant counsel.  The Murphy’s wore IFOTE Local 194 tee shirts for their run – a hat tip to employees of the New Jersey Turnpike.

On Sunday, the Murphy’s visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, where Keiko Ogura, an 86-year-old survivor of the atomic bomb blast, spoke of her experiences.

Murphy also met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui.

The governor is on a Choose New Jersey nine-day trade mission to East Asia.
