Gov. Phil Murphy will spend the next week traveling to Utah and Germany as he attends a national governors meeting and looks to attract international business to New Jersey.
Murphy’s public schedule states that Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way will assume responsibilities as acting governor Wednesday evening, when Murphy departs to Salt Lake City to attend the National Governors Association’s annual summer meeting. Murphy will then fly to Germany on Friday with Choose New Jersey, the Garden State’s business attraction group.
Murphy will return to New Jersey next Tuesday, according to his public schedule.
Way traveled to Puerto Rico on Monday to attend the summer conference of the National Association of Secretaries of State. She is returning today and is expected to be back in New Jersey before Murphy’s departure.
Murphy has taken a keen interest in building relationships with other governors. The NGA, which Murphy chaired in 2022 and 2023, will host a series of events at the Grand America Hotel on Thursday and Friday. Murphy has also chaired the Democratic Governors Association twice, in 2020 and 2023.
Murphy will then travel to familiar ground in Germany with Choose New Jersey, which operates an economic mission in Berlin. Murphy, who served as U.S. ambassador to Germany from 2009 to 2013, last visited Germany last February as a delegate to the Munich Security Conference. Murphy also trekked to Germany and Israel on an economic trade mission in 2018.
