Murphy expects an active lame duck session, ‘win, lose, or draw’

No matter what may happen in tomorrow’s gubernatorial and legislative elections, Gov. Phil Murphy said today that he anticipates the looming lame duck legislative session will be an active and productive one.

“Lame duck is upon us win, lose, or draw,” he said. “Without getting into a lot of detail, you’re going to see us with a pretty robust agenda. There’s still work to be done, still unfinished business.”

The session will take place with the results of the gubernatorial election already decided – and with Murphy potentially soon out of a job – but Murphy said that he plans on utilizing the lame duck period no matter the outcome.

“Does the lame duck look different whether we win or lose?” he said. “We’re going to go at it and work our tail off right through the tape, whenever that comes.”

With today’s Covid press briefing came the implicit acknowledgement that, after tomorrow, Murphy will either be secure for another term or be limited to only two more months in charge of the state. The governor will nevertheless be holding a briefing on Wednesday, though he said it’s not clear yet what format it will take.
