Gov. Phil Murphy agrees with Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin’s call for a user fee on the state’s recreational marijuana industry.
“I was encouraged to see the speaker’s comments about an excise tax, which we’ve supported from day one,” Murphy said.
The language of the ballot question legalizing recreational marijuana use approved by voters Tuesday caps the sales tax on marijuana at 6.625% while allowing local governments to levy a tax of up to 2% on such sales.
That means any additional taxes would hit somewhere on the back end.
